5 Breweries You Need to Visit in Cape Town

The craft beer revolution is taking over the Western Cape, as well as the rest of South Africa. We picked out some of our favourite micro-breweries that you can visit to have a cold pint. If a great atmosphere, good music and delicious beer is after, we have the full selection here for you!

Hoghouse Brewing Company

Hoghouse 1

This brewery is well worth the visit. They have two branches, one just outside Pinelands and one on the Spier Wine Estate. Both offer very different experiences. Should you be in the mood for a pint listening to some live music, the Spier branch provides some great beer-music evenings. The Ndebeni branch however, is a great after-work stop off.

Open from 5pm onward, they have a half-price special on all of their beers Monday to Wednesday from 5-6pm where you can pick up a draught for R19! The décor is simplistic with corrugated iron finishes and exposed light bulbs. The music sets the mood with some old rock and blues oozing out of speakers while you sip on the delicious beer, looking over the microbrewery. The staff are friendly and helpful, eager to tell you about their unusual menu and great beer. Make sure to taste the Porter; it is a dark beer with a surprisingly chocolately with a hint of coffee. If you prefer lighter, fruitier beers, the Haybale Saison is well worth the try with its nutty aromas and the Hogtale African Pale Ale is light and balanced with fruity flavours.

If you are peckish, the menu is extensive and delicious, with their flagship meal being the Brisket. Give the pigs tails a try! They are well worth it!

Devils Peak Brewing Company

Devils-Peak-Brewing

Based in Woodstock, this is a great Saturday afternoon spot to relax with a group of friends and try out the various beers the company has on tap. Beers on tap include the traditional Devils Peak staples, as well as four rotating taps with seasonal specials.

Their range of beers include the crisp, light ale as well as the more bitter, hoppier King’s Blockhouse IPA. The ale is more suited to the lighter palate, who enjoy a softer, less bitter beer. They have also released a variety of flavoured beer, the Love Parade being our Favourite with its passion fruit burst. It is lightly dry hopped and interestingly is brewed with a larger portion of wheat than other traditional ales.

Expect to be surrounded by bare bricked walls, mismatched furniture and great views of Devils Peak towering about Woodstock. The Taproom has a pub menu and offers great specials very single day of the week. From half-price specials to a R62 cheeseburger and beer combo, every day offers something worth popping through for.

Hoogeberg Brewery

Hoogeberg is a microbrewery perched looking over the Signal Gun Wine Estate in Durbanville. This brewery is really the sleeping giant of craft beer in the Northern Suburbs. It creates two delicious beers that are created on site; the Yestervark larger and the Bonte Bok Five Crop Larger.

A lazy Saturday can be spent on the Signal Gun estate, lounging on large, colourful bean bags soaking in the winelands views. The estate boasts a full restaurant for when you start getting nibbley. You can wash a delicious pizza down with a draught of your choice in beer, and make sure to ask for the specials, as they have seasonal pizza-beer deals.

The Ystervark Lager is the flagship beer of Hoogeberg and is full-bodied but not too heavy. It has a lovely light hop flavour while the Bontebok 5 Crop Ale is much lighter, sweeter and has a definite more fruity tone.
